Nutritional Tips

There are so many yummy and healthy foods out there, don't think of a healthier diet as difficult, think of it as a smorgasbord.

According to Australian dietary guidelines, we need a healthy diet made up of an ideal balance of the five essential food groups:

– Fruits
– Vegetables
– Cereals, pulses and legumes
– Dairy
– Poultry, fish and meat products

Here are examples of the types of food you can choose from – they’re all healthy choices and delicious:

– Chickpeas, lentils, lima beans
– Blackberries, papaya, passionfruit, plums, apples, apricots, cherries, carrots, beetroot, corn, pumpkin, avocados and tomatoes
– Capsicums, cucumbers, silverbeet, mushrooms, leeks and asparagus
– Salmon and tuna
– Arborio rice, brown rice, wholegrain breads and cereals
– Low fat dairy products
– Chicken, veal, premium mince meat and eggs

Try to:
Always eat breakfast to kick-start your metabolism and start the day right
Drink water – feeling hungry can be your body’s way of telling you that you’re actually thirsty
Eat healthy snacks, such as fruit, nuts and low fat yoghurt

Try not to:
Drink too much alcohol – it’s just empty calories
Eat in front of the TV or on the run
Eat your kids’ leftovers
Set yourself up for failure – Clear the cupboards of foodie temptations high in fat and sugar, and start planning your weekly menus so you have everything you need in the house to make the right choices
